2) I think the other girls followed Abigail's lead because they feared her. At the beginning of the play, she threatens to stab the girls in the black of some terrible night if they speak up about what happened that night. 4) Abigail's motivation is her jealousy and desire for revenge against Elizabeth since Abigail thinks she is the only thing standing between her and John. *6) When people in the play descend from the authority they tend to yield authority as well. However, at the end of the story, he was a hero. By refusing to give up the names he protected those people at the expense of his own life. The part of the story that showed this the best was when Elizabeth was explaining how he had died: “...They say he give them but two words. “More weight,” he says. And died.” (Miller 1328) This shows that he died with courage and the intention to protect his family and their honor. Even though he died when it was not necessary, he went out trying to protect not only himself but his wife from the inevitable brutality of the Salem Witch Trials.
