1.) Throughout the play many characters contribute to the witch trials. Which character do you believe plays the biggest role in the deaths of those who were accused? a.) I believe that Abigail contributed the most to the deaths of those who accused of being witches. Abigail told the girls to only confess about dancing in the woods. She threatens to kill the girls I they confess about other things they in the woods. Abigail states “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. Abigail wanted revenge on Elizabeth so she accused her for being a witch and said that Elizabeth was sending her spirit to stab her with a needle. Abigail did this because she still loves John Proctor and doesn’t want Elizabeth getting in the way for her love of him. Do you think that Proctor should have confessed? Why or Why not? a.) I think John Proctor chose to die in order to not ruin his self image and reputation from others. He would rather die than live with a stained name where people would think badly of him. Proctor states, “How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name! (143)”. I think Proctor made the right decision to not confess to the court.
