The deaths of one hundred ninety-two men and women, but who is to blame for this careless act? The witch trials that occurred in 1692 were written about in the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller; he recapped the trials that were caused by one girls rumors and jealousy. I believe that the blame is not put on one character, but the entire town of Salem. According to dictionary.com the word villain means, “a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot.” The villain's name in this story may be known as Abigail, but she manages to put the blame of witchcraft on the entirety of the town while getting her name out of the mix. He was known to be unfaithful for one reason only; he committed adultery with Abigail. In court, he stated, “It is a whore! … I have known her, sir. I have known her.”(110). Saying “I have known her” is the same thing as saying, “I have slept with her” ; therefore, he confesses to committing adultery. Committing adultery is the way he showed that he was unfaithful to his wife Goody Proctor. John was asked to sign a confession paper saying that he took part in witchcraft, but he was to well respected to sign his name away. Proctor says “I want my life.”(137). Proctor says this meaning that if he signs his name to a confession that is in reality a lie, then he would never be looked at the same. He also believed that he would lose all the respect he had earned for himself. Not to mention the fact that John Proctor was a rational human being. He was the first one to recognize that all of the talk about witchcraft was a lie. He knew from the beginning that Abigail started the rumor to get with him in the place of Goody Proctor.
