In life, abnormality is commonly portrayed in a bad light and as deficient. Tim Burton, an imaginative filmmaker, opposes this idea and believes nothing is wrong with the abnormal. Instead, being abnormal should be considered exceptional and unique. With the use of physically abnormal characters and contrasted settings, Burton depicts the idea that the abnormal is preferable to the status quo. Burton oftentimes features physically abnormal characters in his films to develop that being abnormal is the equivalent of being extraordinary. For instance, in Corpse Bride, the two settings are exactly opposite of each other, as one is dark and gloomy, while the other is colorful and eupeptic. Anyone new to the movie could have easily mistaken the Land of the Living for the Land of the Dead just by the setting. Low-key lighting was used throughout all of the scenes in the Land of the Living to develop how dark and ominous the place was. Long shots were also utilized as Victor first entered Victoria’s house, to demonstrate how small and weak Victor’s family appeared in the dark, spacious mansion. Then in the Land of the Dead, as Victor first woke up, the audience sees a much wider variety of colors such as green, purple, blue, etc. The buildings are also much funnier looking and the structure and decorations are spooky, yet more eye opening. Victor might have been afraid when he first woke up but then he started to actually smile and enjoy the Land of the Dead, while in the Land of the Living, Victor rarely smiled, especially if he wasn’t with Victoria. The Land of the Dead may have been spooky but the setting was much different and more exciting than the Land of the living. Moreover, in Alice and Wonderland, Britain and Wonderland are very unalike, and quite the opposite. While England is dull, simple, and completely expected, Wonderland is an amazing, fantastical forest with beautiful castles and many different colors. Long-shots and panning are used very much in Wonderland, exposing the nice, yet simple structure of what England’s castles would be expected to look like. Then after Alice managed to escape the mysterious room, as she walks out of the door to completely new setting, establishing shots are used displaying the beautiful gardening and amazing colors of the forest, leaving Alice wonderstruck.
