To begin, the economic incentives from slavery, industrialisation, and abolitionism influenced the growth of the United States during the 1800s by increasing and decreasing free labour for the modern production of goods and materials. During the mid-1800s, slavery had immensely increased, due to industrialisation and the invention of machines that would produce goods quicker. However, the effect of abolitionism demolished the popular acts of slavery in 1865 and caused war through the great divide in beliefs of abolitionism between the North and South states. Furthermore, the economic incentive in slavery influenced the United States to grow in industry and technology. An important industry at the time was the extremely profitable cotton industry in the South, which millions of Americans had depended on to provide them with clothing as it was important and cheap. In addition, the cotton gin had become a popular machine used to help harvest the cotton needed to provided those industries with essential materials. As abolitionism, movements against slavery, were popular in the North/free-slave states, being pro-slavery was popular in the South/slave states. This difference in ideas and beliefs of whether or whether not slavery should be allowed in the United States caused the Civil War and desire for Confederate/South states to become independent from the Union/North states. During this war, according to John Green, nine-hundred thousand soldiers in the Confederacy were against two million soldiers in the Union, and about seven-hundred thousand of those soldiers died during this war. This shows that abolitionism was an extreme contribution to the relationship and views of each other between the North and South
