On June 1969, 21 year old Norma McCorvey got pregnant and decided that she wanted an abortion. She went to her doctor and asked to get an abortion. The doctors wouldn't allow it, because abortion was then illegal. She returned to Dallas, Texas where her friends told her to falsely alert that she has been raped. Her lie did not pursue on because police had no document of rape. She attempted to have an illegal abortion, but found out that the facility has been closed down by the police. Later on, she was referred to two attorneys and had the baby anyway. In 1970, this turned into a case and was about to launch all throughout court. In the website article “Abortion and Crime: who should you believe?”, www.freakonomics.com (2005) they claim that legal abortion reduces crime rates, which makes the world a safer place. Before Roe v. Wade, five states had already established abortion to be legal. They made those five states legal three years before Roe v. Wade, which during that time, it's said that in those five states, crime rates went down 30%. More States with a high abortion rate have experienced a greater reduction in crime compared to states with a low abortion rate. This is because there are less people illegally doing an act and more people legally doing something. In some states, it was still impossible to get an abortion even after Roe v. Wade. Others had clinics that were able to do it wherever you turned. From the period 1985-1997, the high abortion states see a decline in crime of 30% relative to the low abortion states. Studies from “Abortion and Crime: who should you believe?” have shown a reduction in infanticide, which is the crime in which people kill a child within a year of birth. Also a decline in teenage drug use, and teenage childbearing, which is the process of giving birth to children. Still worldwide, there are 10-20 million abortions performed illegally every year. Before abortion was illegal, woman were able to end a pregnancy with the assistance of a medical personnel. Woman were ending their own lives due to complications trying to give themselves an abortion. In 1965, 265 deaths occurred due to illegal abortions. Of all pregnancy-related complications in New York and California, 20% were due to women trying to give themselves abortions. In 1965, Griswold v. Connecticut was a constitutional right to privacy and ruled that a married couple had a constitutional right to take birth control.
