Abortion has been a topic of much debate for many years. The Oxford Dictionary defines abortion as “The removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end pregnancy”. Women should be given the choice to terminate their pregnancy as it is their own body. Many people argue that it is murder and women who opt to have abortions should be charged accordingly. Legalizing abortions in all countries will ensure that women are receiving safe procedures and health care as even if it is illegal, women are still having the procedure. It would be beneficial if abortions are legalized in all countries as every woman will be given the choice to have an abortion.

When women feel that it is absolutely necessary to have an abortion, they will go to any extent to have one. Consequently, women seek out unqualified doctors where the termination is performed incorrectly or in unsanitary conditions. Issues of inadequate medical care and safety arise, particularly in poverty stricken countries where women's rights are not protected. In situations where death is not the result of illegal abortions, women are left in poor health. If the procedure is not carried out correctly, there is also a high probability that the fetus will survive and be born with severe deficiencies. This could lead to the mother neglecting the baby even more once it has been born and an increased chance of child abuse and trauma. By legalizing abortion we are reducing the chances of child abuse, which is already a major issue. In today’s society research by Stephen D. Schwarz, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, showed that “In the two decades before abortion was legal in the U.S, it has been estimated that nearly a million women per year sought out abortions”. Out of these millions of women, thousands had died and tens of thousands were left in an unhealthy state. Once abortion had been legalized by the United States Supreme Court’s in 1973 there has been a major decline in the number of women illegally getting abortions, this was because more women were accessing hospitals and health services. In poverty-stricken countries, such as Africa and El Salvador, the illegitimate procedures typically cause more harm than good. This is because abortion is illegal in 12 of 54 African countries and El Salvador has one of the strictest anti abortion laws. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a leading research organization, “almost all abortion related deaths worldwide occur in developing countries with the highest number occur in Africa”. Modern procedures nowadays are
