Heroism can be defined in many ways. It can be because you helped yourself, or you helped other is a positive way. Throughout history there have been many pupils that we call heroes. Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass are considered heroic because they devoted their lives to helping others, so that their country would be a better place. Abraham Lincoln, a brave young man, is considered heroic for his hard work during the American Civil War. Also, in that time period there was a man named Frederick Douglass who influenced people to go against slavery and support the north. He was a runaway slave, who traveled to the north. When he successfully ran away, he started to feel lonely, and scared to be taken back to the South. He felt that he shouldn't talk to anyone because the could be waiting for a “panting fugitive, as the ferocious beasts of the forest lie in wait for their prey.” But soon, he subscribed to a newspaper named “Liberator” and soon there was something that began to come out. He felt as if it were “truly instinct, brain matter, diastole, systole” and that reading it “sent a thrill of joy through my soul,such as I had never felt before.” He is considered heroic for the brave things he did, speaking out against slavery, even though he could have been killed or captured and sold for doing so.
