Abraham Lincoln is one of the most well-known presidents in United States history. From the Emancipation Proclamation to engaging in early childhood education, Lincoln was loved by many people from the northern states. As the Civil War started between the Union and Confederacy, Lincoln was frowned upon by the Confederates. Although he stated he wanted to preserve the Union and would not remove slavery, his ideals were not in line with the Confederates; this ultimately started the Civil War. Although there were multiple reasons that the war was won by the north, the final outcome of the Civil War was ultimately affected by Lincoln's presidency, his upbringing, and his ability to utilize the technology available in his time. Most northern residents supported Lincoln’s ideas while southern residents had different beliefs: preserve slavery and become independent. He was so liked that the Republican National Convention nominated him for a second term (UVA Miller Center). Because of these ideals Lincoln presented and because he was already the president of the Union, he became the leader of the Union during the Civil War. As leader, he implemented crucial battle strategies that helped the Union eventually win the war. Had Lincoln not been leader and president during the war, the United States would not be the same as it is today. Lincoln’s childhood in Kentucky was primarily spent doing strenuous work and attending a little school. On February twelfth, 1809 Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky.
