President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on the evening of April 14, 1865 at a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D. C. He was accompanied by his wife, Mary Lincoln, and Major Henry Rathbone and Miss Clara Harris, his future fiancee; the Lincoln’s were in a relatively good mood having ended the civil war. The four sat together in a private balcony box. The murderer, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor of that play, hated Lincoln’s reforms. At around 10:00 pm, when the play was ending, Booth had walked past Major Henry Rathbone and shot Lincoln in the head. He then cut Rathbone’s arm and lept off to the stage, protecting himself and fleeing from the crime scene. Yes, slavery was abolished in the United States. The Civil War had ended, and the Confederacy had combined with the Union once again after succession. But was the long turmoil over? Abraham Lincoln’s job was not yet done, as the nation was still divided. Lincoln, the perfect man for the job, was welcoming the Confederacy back like a long lost brother. Unfortunately, on April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated, and the process to reunite the country stopped a sudden halt. “Chaos” followed the assassination of Lincoln. The North blamed the South for the murder of Lincoln. The South, on the other hand, was uneasy and were frightened by the predicted blaming of the North. Southerners were beaten to death and Union troops even shot people who were jubilant of Lincoln’s murder. Those who insulted Lincoln were arrested. It was basically the North versus the South all over again without President Lincoln to
