Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He kept the Union together through the Civil War. Lincoln also started the emancipation of the slaves. Abraham was born in a cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. Lincoln’s father was Thomas Lincoln and his mother was Nancy Hanks Lincoln. His father was a well-respected pioneer. Lincoln had two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother who appallingly died in infancy. The Lincoln’ had a huge land dispute. As a result, they moved from Kentucky to Perry County, Indiana. At the end of the Black Hawk War, Lincoln decided to begin his political career. In 1834, Abraham Lincoln was elected into the Illinois state legislature as a member of the Whig Party. He eventually moved to Springfield, Illinois to begin his practices at John T. Stuart law firm. From 1847 to 1849, Lincoln served a single term in the U.S House of Representatives. He used his term wisely by speaking out against the Mexican-American War. His criticism proved to be unpopular back home so he decided against running for a second term.
