Being a leader is more than telling people what to do, it requires certain characteristics and skill. One person that may come to mind to many Americans is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was born on Sinking Springs farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the 16th president of the United States during the time of 1861 to 1865. Prior to his election he was a successful lawyer and politician in Illinois. Abraham Lincoln is referred to as one of America’s greatest heroes due to his incredible impact on the nation and his unique appeal. Most people know Abraham Lincoln as the president who outlawed slavery, but what people overlook about Lincoln is his incredible sense of leadership. Learning to appreciate and be grateful for everything he has at a young age would and will humble Lincoln in his more mature years of a man. Lincoln learned determination at a young age, traveling 2 to 3 hours to school just to learn and get a good sense of education which was importantly impressed by his mother. After the death of his loving mother, Lincoln did not stop trying to learn and in fact became more determined, trying to learn how to read and write with the supplies he had. Luckily his step mom Sarah though education was important as well and help Lincoln learn to read and write by providing him with the supplies he need although it was very little. Not only did his childhood gave him determination but also allowed him to care and sympathize with his loved ones, most important loved ones his sister and mother. He has a passionate way of showing concern to his loved ones. He works jobs here and there, had some success but also of course had failures, but did not let the failures stop him from continuing to achieve greatness. Lincoln became a lawyer, not pursuing the law but instead running for the Illinois General Assembly. He did fail the first time but the second time both candidates won. Stuart showed Lincoln the ways and loaned him law books. Later on Lincoln received a license to practice law and would go out to receive a respectable record as an attorney. Lincoln running again for the General of Assembly won and later resigned so he would be able to for an election for the U.S. Senate. He was elected in the U.S. house of representatives. Lincoln was practical, in which he never lost sight of the great ends toward his struggles, he never assumed his conclusions would never be accepted merely, he never assumed other's minds worked in the same way his did, he never assumed they would reach to the same conclusion, he never assumed they would feel as he felt, he never relied upon authority or diction or compulsion upon the minds of others.
