Abraham Lincoln led an interesting life: overcoming childhood struggles and poverty to become a president of this country. He got very little schooling, but he taught himself by reading. He eventually got into politics, and started his political career. Lincoln’s experience and work ethic made him very successful for the rest of his life. Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. When he was seven, his family moved to Southern Indiana. While he only got a total of six months of school, he could read very well. He taught himself law by reading books. He got a job as a lawyer, and that’s when he “earned the nickname “Honest Abe” for how he dealt with his clients.” (galegroup.com). He became one of the most respected lawyers in the nation, and even argued before the Supreme Court. When the Black Hawk War came up, he volunteered in the militia. He led a small company of soldiers, but saw no combat. When his term ended, he signed up for two more terms. Lincoln was originally from the Whig party, but that started to fall apart, so he joined the newly founded Republican party. With only “only one undistinguished congressional term under his belt,” (history.com) he became the presidential nominee for his party. When he ran for president, he won no southern electoral votes, about forty percent of total electoral votes, and still became president. This drove many southern states to secession, because they felt they didn’t have a voice in the government.
