In 1861, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States. His great leadership skills helped in Union to succeed over the Confederacy. Even though Lincoln had a very simple upbringing, his hard work and determination led him to become one of the most famous presidents of the United States. Abraham Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. He was physically strong and known for his skill in wielding an ax, making a living splitting wood for fire and rail fencing. While still young Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois, where he worked at various jobs such as shopkeeper, postmaster, and even a general store owner. It was here in New Salem that his social skills made him popular with the locals. He became so popular with the locals that when the Black Hawk War started in 1832, the volunteers in the area elected Lincoln to be their captain (Abraham www.biography.com). Abraham also had a love for animals, especially cats. Even with the civil war coming to an end, he made time to care for three orphaned kittens. He noted in a telegraph hut that he made sure they were fed and went to a good home. They were ten years apart in age. Together they had four sons named Robert, Edward, William and Thomas. On November 6th, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. He beat Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckinridge of the Southern Democrats, and also John Bell of the new Union Party. Lincoln became the first Republican President (www.google.com). Soon after there was rumors of secession of the southern states around the 1830s, and these rumors later became very serious. The Civil War was not all caused by Lincoln’s election, but was a reason the war started in the following year. Abraham decided to fight in the Civil War not because of his feelings about slavery, but rather he felt it was his duty as President to save the Union no matter what
