Introduction Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was president of America in our most desperate time, during the Civil War when all hope was lost. He was one of the most important and well-known presidents to this date. This is because he was extremely important in many aspects. Crafted and signed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all of the slaves in the Confederacy. After fighting a war, he was flexible and generous to the side he just defeated. And he helped America come back together as one and grow together post-Civil War. So let’s take a deeper dive into this man so crucial to our history.

Abraham Lincoln had a very humble and small upbringing. He quickly got into politics and law with his knowledge of the English language. Lincoln gained a lot of his popularity when he debated in the 1855 Illinois Senate race against Stephen Douglas. Though it resulted in a loss, it might have been for the best as he ran for president in 1860. Through this, he won by a good margin against his senate competitor, Stephen Douglas. Now as president, he had to make important decisions. One important decision that Abraham Lincoln made was the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed all the slaves who resided in the Confederacy. Though it did not free all slaves immediately, it was to be put into action when states in the Confederacy rejoined the nation. This left a positive impact on the nation forever leading to the civil rights movement. If he had not been elected, he would have not been seen through history for his Civil War leadership and the Emancipation
