Abraham Lincoln once said, “ When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.”. Lincoln would live by this motto through his life and has president. A person who stays true to themselves and has the best intentions for themselves and others, is a person who will do great things. Abraham Lincoln did just this. I inspire him and find Lincoln as an interesting person, as he had many great accomplishments in his life and was the best person he could be.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville Kentucky. He was the son of Nancy and Thomas Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln split rails for fences and kept store at New Salem, Illinois. He was the caption of the Black Hawk War, spent eight years in the Illinois legislature, and rode the circuit of courts for many years. These activities prior to presidency would prepare him for his term. As farming was a major source of income on the 1800’s, I think it is interesting that Lincoln grew up on a family farm and would later apply principles from the farm to his presidency. When people think of a president, they don’t normally think of one that grew up on a farm. While serving as president, the country was at a time of turmoil. The Civil War was a time of disagreement between the two halves of the country. The North and South were at battle regarding the issue of slavery. President Lincoln was put into a tough situation, he had to satisfy both sides. While entering the war, he stated, “In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assial you… you have no other registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it.”.
