Abraham Lincoln is a famous historical figure that was born on February 12, 1809 and was assassinated on April 15, 1865. He was an American politician and lawyer and he was also the 16th president of the United States. He accomplished many things like abolishing slavery, preserving the union; he strengthened the federal government and many more things. He was elected president on March 4, 1861 and led the United States till his assassination. He was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky when he was older he became a lawyer in Illinois and he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in which he served for 8 years before getting elected into the United States House of Representatives. On September 22, 1862 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declares that all slaves should be free as of January 1, 1863 but it did not mean that people of color would have the same rights as white people. Still after this proclamation people of color were still discriminated against and were often the targets of barbaric crimes. Also, the Proclamation didn't free all the slaves, the Proclamation only applied to the states where the federal government had no control, which were the Southern states that were currently fighting against the union. Lincoln then recognized that for this Proclamation to work it had to be in the constitution so by December 6, 1865 it had already passed the Senate, House and had the necessary number of states ratify it so it became the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment states that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, nor any place subject to their jurisdiction”. With having this 13th Amendment the United States finally found a constitutional solution to slavery and I think this is one of Abraham Lincoln's biggest
