Christianity an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, began in the Mid-1st century. Quickly taking off since that time Christianity is now regarded as the world’s largest religion with about 2.4 billion followers, known as Christians. The central node or belief of all Christians is that is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of humanity, and the Christ or Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament. Originating in Judea, Christianity quickly spread many places such as, Europe, Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and Egypt and by the end of the 4th century, and had become the official state church of the Roman Empire. Christianity soon spread worldwide due to colonization, and missionary work, consequently places such as the Americas, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa had also received the ‘Good News.’ Over time Christianity separated into separate branches, …show more content…

The Catholic Church teaches that it is the one true church founded by the son of God, Jesus Christ, its Bishops are the successors of Christ's Apostles, and that the Pope is the successor to Saint Peter, the head of the church as anointed by Christ. The Church maintains that its doctrine on faith and morals and declares as definitive is infallible (Hitchcock, 42). The Catholic Church separates itself from many other denominations, because of the fact that it venerates the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ as the Mother of God. Catholic social teaching emphasizes support for the poor and lowly, the sick and the afflicted, by enacting help through teachings called the corporal works of mercy (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).
