Like the Sun by R.K Narayan is a story that the main character Sekhar tries to do an experiment that telling the absolute truth through the entire day. Even though telling the truth is a moral and ethical standard; it brings his wife’s sullen face to Sekhar after he told her that her food is not good, and it makes the headmaster upset when Sekhar criticizes his music. Ultimately, Sekhar’s experiment ends up with the punishment from his headmaster that he has to finish scrutinizing a hundred test paper in one night. Like the Sun presents the theme that whether the absolute truth is beneficial by the attitudes and reactions from the people who become the subjects in Sekhar’s experiment. As the first subject in Sekhar’s experiment, Sekhar’s wife winces as soon as he says that her food is not good(R.K.Narayan, Page ). Even it is the truth that the food is not good; the reaction of Sekhar’s wife tells us there is no doubt that it is hurtful and unacceptable for her to get a negative comment to the food which has her hard work on it. The truth also brings a dismay to the headmaster when Sekhar criticizes his singing due to the headmaster has a strong passion and confidence on his music(R.K Narayan, Page ).
