With friendship comes breakups, makeups, and sticky situation, for Arnold Spirit this is very true. He goes through losing his friends, getting them back, making new ones, and creating unbreakable bonds. In the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie explores how friendship is important through never giving up, random moments, and lots of secrets. When you’re going into a friendship you need to be prepared for some ups and downs that come along with it. The character Rowdy in the book is the best example of this. In chapter 3 Arnold explains how Rowdy was his best human friend. They would be together constantly and were inseparable. When Arnold began to go to Reardan he met a guy named Roger, but he wasn’t too nice to him at first. One day Roger came up to Arnold calling him Chief and squaw boy, then said a very racist remark towards black people and Indians, and in that very moment Arnold punched Roger in the face. He thought that Roger would want to finish the fight but he didn’t, he just walked away. The next day when Arnold showed up at school Roger tried to talk to him more, it was like Arnold had gained some sort of respect out of him after punching him. Then later in the book after Roger and Arnold became closer Roger found something personal out about he that he didn’t tell people. Arnold, Penelope, Roger, and a few other dudes went to Spokane to go eat dinner, but Arnold was too poor to pay for anything they got. Arnold went to the bathroom and puked, Roger walked in and asked why he wasn’t doing good: “The reason I was getting sick in there is… I, er, forgot my wallet. I left my money at home man.” Roger totally understood and handed Arnold $40 to pay for the food and didn’t tell anybody.
