Society has made kids believe they belong to one social group or another. That you are either popular or a nerd. Being White and pretty makes you ideal - but being disabled and Indian makes you a freak. Is it possible to break the social norms? For a disabled Indian to befriend people from all classes, and become popular himself? Is it possible to discover true friends from each group? In the book Absolutely True Diary of A Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, he incorporates many friendship messages. Not only does the main character, a 14 year old Indian befriend the popular kids at his new school, and finds a friend for all his interests, it follows the story of him and his lifelong best friend through all his life changes. In the book Junior goes through a lot of loss. With a total of 4 deaths he has to go through. Grandma Spirit’s being one of the hardest. The whole tribe showed up to Grandma Spirit’s funeral, including Rowdy. “ Even Rowdy just stood far away. He would always be my best friend, no matter how much he hated me.” ( Alexie -- ) Junior said. Even though Rowdy was still hurt by Juniors decision he showed up to Grandma Spirit’s funeral. He was still there for Junior and his family, a family he has been so close to. When Rowdy was angry and emotional at Junior he went to Punch Junior. “ ROWDY MISSED A PUNCH!” Junior was shocked when it happened. “I missed on purpose” Rowdy claimed. Junior thinks it’s because Rowdy had tears in his eyes, but I always believed it was because Rowdy didn’t want to punch Junior. He was mad at him… but he didn’t want to be.
