Emma Elliott, a writer for the Concerned Women for America organization, compiled a pamphlet in 2005 in support of an abstinence-only based sexual education system. Elliott establishes her argument in a unique countering organization. She presents a popular claim about sexual education and then refutes it with a reason supporting abstinence. In general, she includes eight mainstream beliefs. The first one is rather general where she refutes that “Abstinence education doesn't work”, and she continues to say that is does and backs up her argument with multiple studies, such as the program “Best Friends” caused 80% less possibility of sexual activity.
One argument the anti-educator and anti-sex groups have is that they are doing it “for the children”, but in reality they are only doing it for themselves and using the children as an excuse. On page 8 Klein states that these groups claim that by providing their children abstinence only education they are protecting them from being interested in sex, hearing about a variety of different sex practices, having sex (resulting in emotional devastation, pregnancy or diseases), ruining future marriage, and liking or enjoying sex too much to the point it gets out of hand. There always comes a moment in a person 's life when one has to grow up, which is sometimes known as coming of age. The period is characterized by a young person who undergoes transition into an adult stage, thus learning to act and live like an adult. While the process of development occurs naturally as an individual advance of his age, it can also be influenced by occurrences, which force the person to grow faster. In most instances, the societal forces force a child to mature faster since one is acquainted with the responsibilities of an adult. For instance, during the civil war era, young people were forced into military so that they can join the war, this taking up the role of adults in the society.
Abstinence is an extreme way of preventing sexual consequences. It’s easy for an adult to tell a teen to abstain from sex but that teen has outside factors trying to convince them to go against such teachings and they eventually engage in a sexual act unprotected because they were taught to abstain and not protect, leading to either a disease or pregnancy. As the old saying goes “Curiosity killed the cat.” So instead of Texas’ teens learning the hard way of their actions and potentially making a dire mistake, why not teach them to be safe with their actions, it makes more sense and holds more positive results. Teens nowadays are more progressive thinking than the generations before us.
I find that just preaching abstinence, as the only way to go is not effective sexual education. It’s key that we teach about birth control and Sexually Transmitted Infections as our society is becoming more sexually active so it’s important that they learn how to have safe sex. Planned Parenthood encourages its patients to make informed decisions and provide an environment where they feel comfortable to ask any questions. If people don’t practice safe sex, they are at risk of getting a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs).

The first study supported their hypothesis that the program would increase pro-abstinence (Rue et al., 2012). The second study found that Family Action Model for Empowerment program helped to reduce risky behavior in teens in the mindset of abstinence (Abel et al., 2008). The third study found that their abstinence Reasons of Heart program achieved a significant reduction in teen sexual development (Weed et al., 2008). Hall, of “Abstinence-Only Education and Teen Pregnancy Rates: Why We Need Comprehensive Sex Education in the U.S.” discuss how sex education is demonstrated throughout the U.S. and how the government may be a contributor to these alarming rates (2011). They state, “some argue that sex education that covers safe sexual practices, such as condom use, sends a mixed message to students and promotes sexual activity” in describing the U.S. Government’s standpoint on sex education (Stanger-Hall & Hall, 2011, p. 1). They strictly believe that abstinence-only education throughout schools is the answer. Abstinence is restraining one’s self from all forms of sexual activity and choosing to not participate in any sexual acts.

Throughout the whole course of this abstinence experience, I failed and succeeded many times. Although I failed most times, what I learned from this abstinence experience is how to control myself. Also, I learned that I can overcome most of my addictions if I try hard enough and put my mind to it. I feel that this abstinence experiment has showed me that I can truly control myself, even though it may be hard. What influenced me the most while trying out this abstinence experiment was that I had a goal set at the end of this whole journey.
B. While both methods seek to reduce teenage pregnancy, STDs, and other consequences of sexual activity, the ways both go about it are vastly different. 1. Comprehensive sexual education is the education plan that teaches topics such as, but are not limited to: human sexuality, puberty, reproductive anatomy, and sexual health. 2. Abstinence-only education, on the other hand, is the sex education method that teaches teens sex should be refrained from until marriage.
Sex Education in Schools Comprehensive sex education courses are a controversial topic facing the educational system all around the world. Typically this course is taught in public schools starting as early as upper elementary to begin addressing sexually related topics such as puberty in both male and females, sexual health as well as sexuality. However, some educators, parents, and students argue this course should not be taught in schools at all! Which in result, is why sex education has ultimately gone nowhere as education has advanced. Factors such as religious principles, sex being viewed as an inappropriate topic as well as taboo, and sex being a topic that cannot be escaped hold the course back from becoming more, and fully providing the necessary information to understand this natural process.
