Abuse of power, either by individuals or government, can affect trust and stability in society, leading to chaos and disorder. In the thousands of years humans have existed, there have been many incidents where certain people gained too much power, commands that lead to the downfall of empires and even civilizations. This concept has been presented in “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller and in many other texts such as “Nero” by Don Nardo which talks about Emperor Nero from the Roman Empire who was a very power hungry leader, “Apartheid” by Gale World History Online which talks about how government abused their power over people to establish apartheid against Black Africans. An example of this is when the girls use their power to accuse innocent people of witchcraft. This text relates to this thesis statement because of how the girls used their power to accuse people of witchcraft, leading to many deaths and supporting my claim. On page 60, Miller states, “I-I Know not a wind, a cold wind, has come. Her eyes fall on Mary Warren”. This example supports this thesis because of how it illustrates the abuse of power and the impact on society. This shows how ever since the girls got such power, they start to abuse it and in this scene, use it to accuse people they don't like of doing witchcraft. In this case, Abigail is abusing her power in court by pretending and making Mary Warren seem like she is doing witchcraft, which is not the case. This also impacts society because people will believe in the impact of witchcraft which leads to mass hysteria and hivemind. This information is relevant in today's history because it shows how life was for people of color back in the 1900’s, where segregation and discrimination was way more relevant than today. The main idea of this article is how the majority of white people with powerful positions in the government used their force against colored people to harass, segregate and manipulate them. This is what makes this article relevant to history and to this thesis.
