Academic Integrity

Trusting yourself is hard enough to explain. It is like making a to-do list: you just have to do is remember that you have to do stuff. If you can not remember to do stuff, you make a to-do list. Maryellen also states that the damage done to a student's self-worth is difficult to repair (Paragraph 4). This means that a person will have less integrity and humility in himself/herself. This could also plausibly mean that students would lack the self-esteem needed to pass a test.

A majority of students think that plagiarism is okay and that there are no consequences. This, however, is far from the truth. The reason for this is because of the idea behind plagiarism: taking another person’s work and claiming it as their own. Maryellen Weimer states

Plagiarism is known to be a symptom of a failing academic integrity. Academic integrity is like a morale compass; you can receive more achievements if you are doing tasks the positive way. Maintaining academic integrity can get farther in life and has advantages, which are mainly: earning the permission to go to college, being able to trust yourself with large and small tasks, and possessing the ability to be trusted by other people.

Going to college is a privilege; they will only accept you if they know it will be worth it. Maintaining academic integrity is an important aspect of enrolling people. If you had failing integrity, you cheat on tests, you plagiarize essays, and you do none of the work yourself. All of this would have a lasting impact on your permanent record that colleges do not want to see. In other words, if you have a good sense of academic integrity, then you have a much higher chance of enrolling into more prestigious colleges because you work harder for your education, you care about copyright, and live by academic

If you do not trust yourself, then you would be a very lazy student, and you would not want to get anything finished. This has to deal with personal integrity as well as academic integrity. Maryellen Weimer states “cheaters lie to themselves and lie to others” (P5). Cheaters do not have personal integrity. They want to lie to themselves about their education just to get by. Trusting yourself means being able to not complete homework and projects on time, but remembering to make reminders, and complete tasks other than homework.

Being trustworthy to not only yourself, but also to other people is an even better by-product. This means that you never turn back on someone, and you remember to go to important meetings, clubs, events, etc. If you wanted to go to a social gathering, such as Bob’s birthday party, you would want to know about it; Bob would be very happy you came. It would make you become more trustworthy and memorable for Bob. Being able to be trusted by other people will make you want to trust yourself more, and therefore have higher personal and academic
