Joanne Johnson Professor Olasunmbo Ajimoko ACC 577 Financial Accounting June 12, 2017 The non-alcoholic beverage industry has always been a highly competitive and innovative industry with many entrepreneurs creating their own niche. Two companies within the industry have withstood the test of time to become global competitors. Coca Cola (Coke) and PepsiCo (Pepsi) are global giants in this sector. They transformed into well-known brands throughout the world providing not just a beverage but a lifestyle. Coca Cola was created in 1886 by John S. The company grew through the 1920’s until the Great Depression. At that time, the company filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated. The trademark was bought and sold before being acquired by Charles Guth, a candy manufacturer. He began marketing and distributing the cola syrup at discount. Sales grew at a great rate and the Pepsi brand was established. In 1940, marketing was directed to the untapped African American communities by Walter Mack, president. The end of World War II marked the beginning of the expansion into markets around the world. In 1965, Pepsi Cola merged with Frito-Lay to form PepsiCo Inc. PepsiCo Inc. many products over the years include Doritos, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, fast food restaurant chains Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, joint ventures with Starbucks and Quaker Oatmeal’s line of products.
