n addition to Clay’s confusion of identity, Lula’s role in the play suggests female control as Clay, the male counterpart, is represented as a rather passive, intimidated personality. Lula manipulates, controls, and drives their relationship throughout the story. This condition shows a reverted traditional masculine gender role. Both Lula and Clay show an act of transgression of their own respective boundary, in terms of sex and culture.
