The Success in year 1964 1964 was a year of civil rights, successful media, and sports. The year of 1964 was a successful year in that not only was it a year of philanthropy, but the movie and sports businesses saw numerous wins during the year as well. Without the advancements of civil rights made in 1964, our society would still be segregated and unequal to this day. In the 1960’s, cultural and civil movements shaped the decade for the better. Before the marches and protests, an African American and a white person having lunch in the same restaurant would be infallible. While many achievements were made toward equality despite race or religion, advancements towards women’s rights were also made in 1964. Within the “Civil Rights Act of 1964”, it describes how it bettered women’s rights in the workplace, ensuring they could not be turned away from a job regardless of race, sex, or religion. It was also made “illegal to restrict jobs to one sex or the other based purely on sex or stereotypical assumptions about gender-linked abilities” (Ford 1). With these advancements towards equality, unemployment rate plummeted and the economy benefited towards the now wholesome job market. At the time, when this bill was passed, sexism was still seen as just a part of everyday life for women. They were expected to live for men; to grow up preparing to be a housewife-to wear what society approved and saw fit, to never seek jobs held by men, to stay at home cooking, cleaning, and taking care of one’s posterity, and to never speak out against their husbands. One of the more prevalent actors at the time was Julie Andrews. Julie got into the acting business as a kid she started her career “At the age of 10, Andrews began singing with her pianist mother and her singer stepfather”, she found her success from her “remarkably powerful voice with perfect pitch, she made her professional debut in 1947” (“Dame Julie Andrews” 2). After spending years in the music industry, she moved to acting and made her “Broadway debut in 1954, … in 1956 she created the role of Cockney flower girl… in My Fair Lady” (“Dame Julie Andrews” 3). After the huge success of her part in Broadway, “Walt Disney went backstage and offered Andrews the title role of the magical proper English nanny in his Mary Poppins. The film, which came out in 1964, also demonstrates the success of the year. It was “considered to be among the finest of Walt Disney’s productions” (“Mary Poppins” 1). In fact, the success of the film was so monumental that at the “1965 Oscars [it won] five awards and [was] nominated for eight others. So enduring [was] the film’s legacy that it inspired a hit stage production that opened in 2004” (“Mary Poppins” 3).
