The American Dream was once the idea of being able to come from poverty and take that and create something from nothing making a better life for one’s family than had in the past. In the book They Say, I say With Readings Cal Thomas and Brandon King have both written papers discussing the topic of the American dream each author using a different angle to exploit their views on the topic. This paper will analyze both author’s texts, creating three different points made by each and comparing them. The first point will be on the American Dream and how it is portrayed in both texts. The second point will cover any texts used in the essays in comparison to the other paper and how those writings improve the author’s argument.
The American dream carries a different meaning for every person. The definition may also change according to the time period and situation. In many sources, the American dream is defined as the ideal that all United States citizens should have equal opportunity to obtain success and prosperity through dedication. Two famous speeches, “The Speech at the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry and “The Speech in the Constitutional Convention” by Benjamin Franklin, define the term American dream during the time we were fighting for our independence. These speeches helped define the American dream by motivating the colonists to build the foundation foundation of the term, which is freedom and independence.
“Things usually work out in the end.” “What if they don’t?” “That just means you haven’t come to the end yet.” (Walls 259) By definition, The American Dream is both the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American as well as a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S.
The American dream is a dream of land in which life should be better and richer for everyone. It’s a land where people succeed to accomplish their ambition of a better life. Most of the people have a different way of defining this American Dream. Unfortunately, for some, it could mean wealth,status,or power whereas for others it could mean companionship, good morals,love,and amity. With numerous changes occurring in the economy, people struggle to live their daily lives. Everyone is allowed to have The American Dream, but achieving it is a different story. The issue is people are still holding on to the American Dream.
The American dream is like food; it is a subjective desire constructed based on the individual. Everyone has their own flavor and idea on how it should be made. With such variance in ambition, it is an exercise in futility to attempt to define a ubiquitous goal. Imagine being the poorest kid in school, being bullied and not fitting in, having a bad life at home. Now, imagine someone like this this achieving greatness. If not greatness, then just the normal American dream. My definition of the American dream is setting an achievable goal, so an American citizen can have enough money to be at least middle class and be happy at their job. Family, peers, and teachers may influence the way an American sees the goal “the American Dream”.
The “American dream” is a phrase that can have many meanings to different people, but the American Dream is the dream that people in the U.S wishes it comes true. An immigrant, an alien, comes to this country searching for that dream. The American Dream is basically a legend about success, about overcoming obstacles, and is about living that victorious life we all wish to have.
