Achilles was a hero of the Trojan War. His father was Peleus, the mortal (human) king of the Myrmidons who were skilled soldiers. According to Greek myth, when Achilles was a baby it was foreseen that he was going to die. His mother Thetis was a nymph and did not want this happening to Achilles. She did various acts to ensure that this was not the case. Thetis was determined to make Achilles immortal.
Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx. This river in the underworld was supposed to provide powers of invulnerability and immortality. She dipped his entire body into the water. But what Thetis didn’t realize is she held Achilles by the heel. Meaning, his heel was not touched by the water of this magical river. Achilles then grew up and survived
