Mercutio’s attempt in protecting Romeo’s honor leads to an
Mercutio is making light of Romeo’s deep depressing love for Rosaline, he’s mocking love and making it a joke. This creates an emphasis on Romeo’s utter affixation with love. Mercutio’s playfulness and ability to make a serious subject humorous and reasonable bring out the deep, dark, and depressing side of Romeo, who is completely the opposite when it comes to love. Romeo does not see love as a joke and we see him fall into a depression, Mercutio only makes this sadness more apparent as he talks so jokingly of love. Shakespeare uses Mercutio to lighten Romeo’s depression and make it more
Mercutio is different from Romeo because he does not believe in love and makes fun of Romeo and falling in love so heavily all the time. When Romeo describes his love for Rosaline using a rose with thorns as a metaphor. Mercutio laughs and says ”If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking and you beat love down”(I.4.27-28). In another scenario of Romeo and Mercutio’s foils is when Romeo tells his friends about a dream he had about the party and is expecting a disastrous outcome of the party. Mercutio makes fun of Romeo because he does not believe that dreams can become visions of impending danger.
While heading to a Capulet party Romeo brings up the topic of dream, to which Mercutio describes as “children of an idle brain,/begot of nothing but vain fantasy”(I.iv.98-99). Romeo believe that dreams truly mean something important, but Mercutio believes they are nothing but a fantasy. Their thoughts compared to each other highlights Romeo’s trait of being a romantic lover who believes in fate. Romeo’s trait would not have been able to be shown with Mercutio, making him a foil because of his contradictory
Mercutio, the Forgotten Impact Romeo and Juliet , written by William Shakespeare, is one of the most beloved and influential plays in the history of humanity. It is a magnificent love story where audiences get to witness the drama and events that lead to the death of the two star-crossed lovers. Many wonderful characters in Romeo and Juliet are loved, but no character had such a vibrant personality and is able to steal the spotlight the way Mercutio does. He speaks in many scenes where he uses his humorous phrases to amaze and make his audiences laugh like when Mercutio convinces Romeo to dance, which in turn allows Romeo to fall in love with Juliet and Mercutio's Queen Mab speech which uses sexual humor for comedic effect. However, even though
Quotes and rhetorical devices help to establish the fact that whenever Romeo is around Mercutio, they are pretty much always
Mercutio’s speech about Queen Mab, who is responsible for making men dream, captures Mercutio’s brilliantly witty character. With the fantastical descriptions of the “fairies’ midwife” (1.4.52) and her entourage, the monologue is reminiscent of a fairy tale or a nursery rhyme (“Her chariot is an empty hazelnut made by the joiner squirrel,” 1.4.65). Mercutio uses this speech to dismiss Romeo’s ‘prophetic’ dream that he attempts — and fails — to tell his friend about, in hopes of not going to the Capulet’s masquerade. I interpreted the speech in which Mercutio is an older figure jokingly patronising a child’s whining (Romeo in 1.1) by providing a fable of sorts to ultimately explain and rationalise that dreams “are the children of an idle brain”
Throughout the whole play both Romeo and Mercutio were there for each other when in need of a friend or even just some comforting words. Mercutio always seems to say the right things to put Romeo back on track and in focus. While Romeo was relentlessly weeping over his unrequited love for Rosaline, Mercutio, with his wise and caring words said, “‘Why is not this not better than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable.
Juliet 's apparent death reveals the reactions and true emotions that her parents, The nurse and Paris felt towards her. Act 4 scene 5 starts with a humorous and eager tone but suddenly switches to a more sorrowful and sad tone as soon as the nurse discovers Juliet’s pale dead body. They were shocked and upset because it meant to be juliet 's wedding night. Their attitude and reaction shows us the importance of Juliet in their lives. Their relationships with Juliet in the past have an impact on the way they reacted.
lief Nurse, After the party on Sunday night, Romeo climbed ov'r a mure and stoodeth in the orchard, listening to me talk to myself. I wast unaware that Romeo wast standing under me, so I asketh wherefore Romeo must beest a Montague, the enemy of mine family. I hath said that if 't be true Romeo would refuse his name, I would giveth myself to that gent; or if 't be true that gent simply swore that that gent loved me, I would refuse mine Capulet name. Romeo then responded, surprising me because I didst not knoweth that gent wast thither.
Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of Act one, scene five is far more remarkable than Franco Zeffirelli’s since it draws more attention from the audience while fueling more excitement when Romeo and Juliet first meet. Within Luhranmann’s version, Romeo attends Capulet’s party just like Zeffirelli’s but Luhranmann’s perception was a lot more visually appealing. The location, costumes, colors and music create an enhancing mix that is more eye-catching to the viewers. The party itself was modern looking that sets the scene to be a lot more relatable to today’s generation already gaining the interest of youngsters.
Oh Ken, as soon as you told me that the Parliament was voting if the UK would start to bomb Syria, I started to follow the news for knowing what they decided, finally Cameron's proposal won, I don't know if their decision was the correct or not, and I am nobody for judging them, I only hope they have taken the best decision for the UK and the security of its people, and not because of foreign pressure because sadly there will not be turning back... On the other hand, I'm not too sure if the non-participation ensures internal security, so, what does it do in these cases? It's too difficult to know it... Macri isn't a true peronist, but How can you win an election in a country where the most people are peronists? surely, you would need of their votes otherwise it would be impossible doing it; then, the most of the candidates claim to be peronists or at least they try to show themselves as too close to the peronist ideas, and as you can find what you want into the
In this scene, this is right after Juliet bid her goodbyes and farewells to her secret husband, Romeo, before he was to leave Verona for good. Since our interpretation of the scene is set in modern times, meaning 2017, the scene shall open up with Juliet laying on a bed in pajamas. She will have her phone in her hand, texting ‘Romeo’ a bunch of ‘I’ll miss you’s and the like, depicting a typical teenager nowadays. This helps bring the audience to the present time, mainly because they didn’t have that type of technology nor communication in the late 1500’s. Also, most teens are on their phones constantly, so when Lady Capulet is to enter, that’s what she’ll find Juliet doing;an additional stage direction, like Juliet looking up from her phone
If we consider the balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet in Act 2, Scene 2, what is the message Shakespeare wants us to understand about the decisions people make when they are in love and they believe the world is against them? Act 2, Scene 2 is a part of the play Romeo and Juliet, which was written by William Shakespeare. In this specific scene, the characters Romeo and Juliet finally convey their love and affection for each other on a balcony. Shakespeare is trying to explain how people who are in love with each other believe they are meant to be with each other and will do anything. One time this is expressed in the story is when Juliet shouts “Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll
In Romeo and Juliet, my favorite part was in Act 2, Scene 2. Which was the balcony scene, I like this scene because it touches your heart and realizes how much their last names get in the way of them loving one another. This was the best to me because Romeo goes up to Juliet's house, and they talk about how much they love one another. I also liked how Juliet came to the realization for a little bit that maybe falling in love too fast isn't a great idea. I feel like this showed that she was a smart kid and realized the negative things that could happen if they got married young without parent's approval.
