Homosexuality in anime can be found in a variety of anime, however, there may be some anime with homosexuality content that are misinterpreted. How a translator translates the anime into English dub or sub can severely impact not only the reader’s interpretation of the anime, but it hurts the countries that created the anime as well. While in America homosexuality is rising and same sex marriage is becoming more and more legal, Japan is a much more reserved country where even heterosexual couples have to be mindful of displaying any type of affection in public (Spran, 2017). I plan on using Adirenne Rich’s concept of how heterosexuality is not “natural” to help the audience understand that characters from anime series do not have to play by a heterosexual narrative (Rich, 1980). To accompany Rich’s article, I also found an article that talks about how Japan perception of homosexuality was different before Western influence, which also shows proof that heterosexuality is not innate, or something that one is born with (Gibney, 2004). Next, I can talk about the power of heterosexuality and how it establishes control over performances of media, including anime. Expanding on the power over, I would have to refer from Sedgwick for a clear explanation of how heterosexuality has a strong influence to shape the world around us, along with how to resist the power of heterosexuality and its presence in anime (Sedgwick, 1994). Lastly, to explain the damage that homophobia inflicts onto homosexual anime series, I will use Eribon’s “Insult and the Making of the Gay Self” (Eribon, 2004).
