Summary of Lesson
Chelsea noted the following student learning targets:
• Understand that adjectives describe nouns.
• Work with adjectives in meaningful contexts.
• Fill out graphic organizers, using adjectives to describe an object.
• Follow a formula to create short adjective poems.
• Use a picture as inspiration for a short story, in which they will incorporate the use of descriptive adjectives.
An intriguing picture was displayed on the SmartBoard when students arrive. The picture was of three men holding a giant oarfish on a beach. The students were super excited when they saw it, making guesses as to what is was. They had an extensive list of adjectives on their desks. Record the adjectives given by the student on the chart. Keep posted as a reference.
Next, Chelsea divided the students into differentiated work group with adjective resources and pencils. Each table received a box containing nouns of pieces of paper. Directions were read aloud by one member of the team and students completed the tasks independently. Chelsea visited the groups to be sure that they were on task and following directions.
Group 1: Struggling Readers and Writers- Object box and adjective graphic organizer- Students will pick an object out of the object box and record adjectives that describe that object/noun in their graphic organizer.
Group 2: Middle Readers and Writers- Noun box, poem instructions, and lined paper- Students will pick a noun out of the noun box and find 3 adjectives to describe that noun. They will then follow the formula to create a poem about that noun.
Group 3: Advanced Readers and Writers- Picture box and lined paper- Students will pick a picture out of the picture box and be asked to write a short story about that picture. In that story, they will incorporate the use of descriptive

Understanding adjectives not only makes our writing more engaging, but it helps us understand, as readers, why authors choose the words that they do. I love the adjectives and poems and stories you were coming up with today! We will continue to find and use rich, descriptive adjectives in our writing. And we will keep an eye out for them in our reading. Excellent work!

The lesson plan included the central focus, references and supporting research, curriculum/content standards, learning targets, academic language and supports, materials, technology, prior knowledge, student development, classroom learning environment and differentiation, lesson body, lesson end/closure, and assessment. All materials were prepared in advance and accessible throughout the lesson. They included: All Kinds of Adjectives- print out, adjective graphic organizer, adjective poem instructions, lined paper, box of objections, box of possible nouns, and box of pictures.
