Adjusting to America How tough is it coming to America from another country? Every year, thousands of people immigrate to America alone for different reasons whether it be war or just to start a new, better life. For some, it was not even a choice whether they could leave, because the only other option was eventually death. Even with help from others, the transition from their old customs, to the American lifestyle is very hard to do. Many people had to adjust living in the United States. In the personal story, Bonne Annee, it says “We are not meant to be in this country. We did not want to come. We were forced to flee or die.” Many immigrants didn’t have a choice to come to America, they were forced, so adapting to American culture would be difficult after having no knowledge of people's’ ways or language. This was hard because many immigrants were forced out of there homes and had to move to another place, with many people who do not even know the new language. From the story A Place to Call Home, it says “All the movies are just great propaganda...like it’s a lot of fun and you have a lot of money...you don't think about, like, you have to pay the mortgage.” Many people came to America thinking this is a place to become rich, they forgot about the money the use for rent, and how they are supposed to pay for it. The expectations of coming to America was a lot different than what the reality was.
