Adlerian therapy consists of a holistic, goal-oriented approach that emphasizes a variety of aspects of human life. I find myself strongly identifying with Adlerian therapy and see myself using this single theoretical approach as the basis of my counseling style. There are a variety of techniques and views of Adlerian that I think are important and will apply to my future role as a counselor. One thing that Adler stressed in this therapy is social connectedness. I think this is very important to consider, especially being that I will be working in a school setting. I strongly believe that feeling connected with others is crucial to living a happy and healthy lifestyle. Because of this, I think goal setting will help my students better be able to achieve what they need by thinking about what it is that they really want and what they need to do to reach that goal. Another thing that I found to be useful when thinking about my approach as a future school counselor relates to Adler’s view on feelings of inferiority. He believes that inferiority can result in two different ways: it can give us the motivation to become something more in life or it can immobilize us. As I was thinking about this, one thing that came to my mind is empowerment. As a school counselor, if I am able to empower my students and help them build up the confidence to make change in their lives, I can help them beat those inferiorities that they may have. To do this, I will also need to use Adler’s encouragement perspective, which I also am very fond of. This theory is grounded on positive orientation and seeks to help the client figure out what is working so they can focus on a solution to the problem. Being that I am going to be a school counselor and will not necessarily be seeing my students on a long-term basis, I think it is important to be able to use solution-focused brief therapy when appropriate. Although this therapy does not focus much on the past, this aspect is one thing that I do have to say is very important from my point of view. With that said, I will apply a lot of the aspects of solution-focused brief therapy, while attending to what has happened in the past to cause the problems that my student’s are facing. One of my favorite techniques that I will be applying in the future is the miracle question. I think that is a great way to gain insight on what an individual is experiencing and what they want to change about it. Another technique that I also appreciate from this type of therapy is the scaling questions. This is a very beneficial way to figure out what a person is feeling and how intense the feeling is, without needing to hear much. Overall, I think that this would be effective for students who come to me looking for a quick solution to a problem that would benefit from these types of
