Admirable Characters In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders

Our world has many different people with different beliefs, thoughts, and personalities. S.E. Hinton’s book, The Outsiders, shows this. Some characters are Socs and some are Greasers; some are admirable and some are reprehensible. In The Outsiders, the most admirable character is Sodapop. Sodapop is an admirable character because he is filled with positively warm energy that makes people feel good and he is an understanding person. When he confesses his feelings and opinions about Darry and Ponyboy arguing, he says, “I mean, I can’t take sides. It’d be a lot easier if I could, but I see both sides...I dropped out of school because I’m dumb...Look, I’m happy working in a gas station with cars. You’d [Ponyboy] never be happy doing something like that. And Darry, you ought to try to understand him [Ponyboy] more, and quit bugging him about every little mistake he makes. He feels differently than you do.” Sodapop’s words indicate that he understands the problems and differences between Darry and Ponyboy and can see the reason in both their arguments.
