Theatre has intoxicated me all the time, it stimulates me to think, gives me comfort and enlightenment. As a way to articulate myself and interact with the world, theatre arts makes me believe I am a freewill person. Early in high school, I have directed and performed in a 15-minute original playlet called Duo Duo. Duo Duo used dream as a tool to discuss the anxiety of adolescence and achieved great success in our school’s drama festival. This is how it all started. In my sophomore year, I joined the Tongwen Drama Club and was selected as the principal. Our first performance was Roland Schimmelpfennig’s Golden Dragon. In our production, I mainly undertook the job of acting as well as dramaturgy, which was a real challenge since this script is so avant-garde and complicated. The success of this work encouraged me to step further. In 2016, I directed my first original immersive documentary theatre work “I Am□□□”. Applying the concept of synchronicity into daily college life, I devised ten separate rooms holding performances that reflected the living state of youngsters simultaneously, at the same time allowing the audience to interact with performers to trigger new performative possibilities. Overcoming many difficulties during rehearsals, my performers and I finally produced a brilliant piece of work, which won the praise from many professors and students. Later that year, I directed my second original work “Insomnia”, a performance that combined video, storytelling and dance elements together to create a world beneath soberness. I went for the audition of his new work Teahouse 2.0 and was selected to play the leading role Liu Mazi in this adaptation of the Chinese masterpiece of Lao She. During the rehearsals, Wang guided me to renovate this classic role and finally turned it to a psychologically traumatized pimp, a tragic villain. Wang motivated me to carry out my own understanding and inspired me to experiment various acting methods. When my performance received rave reviews from the critics, I was overjoyed. My time working alongside a professional director as experienced and committed as Wang Chong has really broadened my views on contemporary theatre. His meticulous approaches and professional skills will act as a model for any future productions I am involved
