Have you ever been accused of a mistake you never made? Would you feel frustrated? Well imagine how Adnan Syed felt when he was convicted, and possibly framed, for the murder of Hae Lee in 1995. Sarah Koenig, the author of the podcast, had a purpose to show us that there are real systemic flaws in our justice system, and was successful in doing so. She proved this by showing that the judge became disbarred shortly after finishing the case with Adnan, evidence was forgotten about in court, and there were possible suspects and witnesses ignored. Throughout the podcast she uses numerous examples of logos, pathos, and ethos to help us openly realize how flawed the case of Adnan Syed turned out and inform us about the consistent flaws in the justice system today.
Sarah used ethos to enlighten us on the fact that the judge who was in charge of Adnan’s case was disbarred shortly after concluding the case. This means that she made a fatal mistake to get herself fired. Sarah told us this solely of the fact that she hoped for us to question if the judge in charge of his case was a credible judge. When Sarah found this case, it was about 15 years after Adnan had been accused and convicted. At that point, surveillance footage had been thrown out and memories that could be used as an alibi were inevitably forgotten. A great example of this is the testimony of Aysha Mclain. Sarah interviewed Aysha and discovered she told the court she had been in contact with Adnan in the library at the exact time of the murder. This would have given Adnan a clear alibi, so why wasn’t this looked into further?
