Adnan Syed was charged with capital murder in June of 1999 and was sentenced to life in prison. Although he was accused of killing his ex girlfriend Hae Lee, Adnan Syed is innocent. According to the National Registry of Exonerations they have “... recorded 2,161 exonerations in the United States from 1989 through the end of 2017.” (Bain) What happens to these people that are wrongly convicted? They never used his alibi Asia, stating that he was in the library during the time of the murder. The DNA found on Haes Lee's body was never tested, because it cost to much to do so. The lack of evidence was a big issue with the case. Looking back the only thing the state had on Adnan was Jay's stories. Jay is not a very reliable source. He was a classmate and sometimes they would smoke weed together. Jay even borrowed Adnan's car and cellphone on the day Hae Min Lee disappeared. According to Jay, Adnan was planning to kill Lee, and would need Jay to pick him up after the murder was done and then some how roped him into helping bury the body. There are many questions about what actually happened that day and Jay’s account has not been consistent. (McDonell-Parry) In fact, in interviews with police Jay’s’ statements changed. First he claimed that that Adnan picked him up from his house and they went to Westview Mall. However in the second interview, he said they went to Security Square Mall. (Bondar) Also the autopsy report even brings into question Jay’s testimony that Adnan showed him the body in the trunk and then he helped him bury the body. This was about 4 ½ hours after she was allegedly strangled. However, the report stated that she was laying face down for 10 to 12 hours before that. Those times just don’t match up and make his scenario of what happen impossible.
