Adrienne Rich's highly-acclaimed poetry which offers illuminating meditations on her personal experiences of womanhood has contributed to the critical acceptance of the politicization of poetry. A self-identified lesbian-feminist, Rich is a prolific writer of influential essays and poems on the position of women and their struggles. Throughout Rich's poem "Translations" we see this as she shows her personal anger and political principal related to her experience of womanhood being exemplified. In "Translations" she talks about the pitiable condition of a woman who suffers mentally because of her husband and the wretched condition of a male dominated society. Adrienne asks the world to show a woman of her age or a younger person and that she will be able to identify the woman easily with words like "enemy, oven, sorrow" which is enough for her to confirm that she is a woman of her time. "We've trained it like ivy to our walls baked it like bread in our ovens worn it like lead on our ankles watched it through binoculars as if it were a helicopter bringing food to our famine or the satellite of a hostile power" (Translations). Another example that show the struggle of women throughout this time is also during the poem "Translations" when the author describes the life of a working woman as, "trying to make a call from a phone booth". She is making the call to her husband but the pathetic condition of the male dominated society she is living in is pictured very well, "The phone rings endlessly in a man's bedroom She hears him telling someone else Never mind.
