Advanced practice nurses (APN) have a vital role in the future of health care, especially since the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act. With more citizens having health insurance coverage they will be seeking health care providers, and there are not enough physicians to care for them all. According to Letiziam (2014), advance practice nurses are licensed autonomous health care providers that have been trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients and their conditions. Advanced practice nursing is an umbrella that covers four separate roles of nurses, this includes: the certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), and certified nurse specialist (CNS).
Throughout the last three years, I have worked with the elderly in a nursing home called Aase Haugen as a certified nursing assistant. Since then, I have gained a tremendous amount of respect for registered nurses. Their leadership, passion, and commitment has inspired me to provide great health care to patients now and in my future career as a nurse. I am currently a freshman that has been accepted into the nursing program at Luther College. I think I would be a good candidate for this scholarship, because I put a tremendous amount of heart into my job and truly enjoying helping and assisting the elderly.

Much of the confusion revolves around the differences between physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. It is important to understand the profession of the Advanced Practice Nurse. To understand the profession, a plan of action must be in place. First one must understand the scope and practice that the state requires. This has to be researched and understood what is expected of the practitioner. Healthcare is highly regulated at the federal and state levels. Laws are written to address different principles. These laws reflect societal expectations and are designed to guide us. As advanced practice nurses, we have a responsibility to fully understand the law and play our part in shaping health care policies that affect our patients and practice.
The transition from an Associate Degree (AD) nurse to a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a rewarding time during a nurse’s career. There are many reasons why nurses return to college to get their BSN degree. Some return to meet a personal goal others return for professional advancement or are mandated by their employer to do so. Over the past few years many organizations stopped hiring AD nurses or drastically reduced the number they hire. Many AD nurses who delayed returning to school regret not doing so sooner when they realize the wealth of knowledge gained from getting their BSN degree.
Reflecting on the past seven weeks I have acquired countless knowledge, which I will use to further strengthen my profession as an Advanced Practice Nurse. The course allowed me to think beyond my current practice knowledge and acquired innovative ways to evaluate the situation at hand. The learning objective in program outcome four helps set standards that I will use to guide my clinical practice to meet various healthcare needs. Using the case studies has helped to further enhance my knowledge on disease physiological state, using differential diagnosis, disease manifestations, and clinical presentation. It has also taught me the skills on how to differentiate between similar diagnoses to properly identify the problem and treat the patients.
The baccalaureate prepared nurse role is crucial in ensuring the successful implementation of quality management in healthcare. The major role of healthcare professionals such as nurses, doctors, and physicians is the delivery of high-quality patient care and safety. However, studies show that some factors that contribute to the low-quality patient care and safety include medical errors, adverse drug events, and negligence of health care providers. The baccalaureate prepared nurse has the responsibility of improving patient outcomes by taking part in quality management processes in the healthcare.
Introduction Honduras is located in the heart of Central America, with a population of about 8.5 million inhabitants (source). Although in the past decade the economy had been improving, various political anomalies have been shaking the economy lately. It is known to everyone that Honduras is a third world country and that it has some serious poverty issues. Poverty is highly denoted in the rural areas of the country. This problem affects about 60 % of the population and there are many private and non-profit organizations that want to help lower this percentage.
I just completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and look forward to exploring nursing theory, evidence-based practice and leadership even further in the advance practice curriculum. I am pursuing family nurse practitioner because it will allow me to be more versatile in my nursing skills and serve a larger patient population. There has been a focus on primary care medicine since the Affordable Care Act; resulting in a larger need for nurse practitioners required to care for this patient population. I have been granted an opportunity to advance my career and I am more than ready to take on the added responsibilities and handle treatment plans autonomously, as well as learning additional skills such as diagnosing and prescribing medications. By obtaining my graduate level education my clinical judgment would be enhanced to improve safety, quality of care and patient outcomes substantially.
Evolution from Novice to a Beginning Professional Nurse Looking back when I started my nursing school, I can proudly say that I have evolved both physically and psychologically. I was not sure if nursing was the right choice for me at first because I had difficulties interacting with people outside my family circle. The first semester was challenging for me because I did not know how to interact with my class mates and felt isolated each time there is a class activity. I joined a study group later that semester and it has been an excitement ever since.
