Odysseus’ Advantage The Odyssey, by Homer, is about Odysseus’ ten-year journey to get back home after the Trojan War. Odysseus was a brave hero from Ithaca who fought in the Trojan War. On his way home, to reunite with his wife and son, who are forced to host suitors due to his absence, there were some unexpected circumstances that delayed his return. On his journey, he goes through many roads of trials and temptations to return to his wife and son. Although some people may argue that Odysseus was skilled, truly, he is lucky because of the help he got from the White goddess and Athena. The first reason that Odysseus is lucky is because of his encounter with the white goddess. Their encounter is shown in The Odyssey when the white goddess says, “Here, wrap this veil around your chest. / Its immortality charmed: Fear no harm or death. / But when with your hands you touch solid land / Untie it and throw it into the deep blue sea / Clear of the

A specific example of this is when she made the villagers forget about what Odysseus did to them. According to the text, “Lay down your arms now, / And go your ways with no more bloodshed. / Thus Athena, and they turned pale with fear. / The weapons dropped from their trembling hands / And they fell to the ground at the goddess’ voice / Sent shock waves through them. They turned / Back toward the city and ran for their lives. / With a roar, the great, long-suffering Odysseus / Gathered himself and swept after them” (Homer 24.553-560). This piece of evidence shows Athena helping Odysseus by making the villagers forget about their children’s murder and recognize Odysseus as their King. This was very significant because without her help, the whole village would have been against Odysseus, and he would have most likely died. This proves how lucky he is to have Athena by his
