Breaking the Mould – Canada’s Education Gap If one thing can be said about the education system, it would be centered on its constant state of change, regardless of the level - elementary, high school, college or university. An alarming concern of today is the idea that secondary and post-secondary institutions seem to be moving in opposite and conflicting directions, and no one seems to be acknowledging the gap. These discrepancies put our students at a severe disadvantage, doing our hard-working youth an international disservice when they are dropped on their heads in a world much more prepared than them. In taking a look at the policies largely instituted by the Ministry of Education, more concerning behaviour comes to light. When an assignment is late, student work is not penalized for punctuality. Late work is viewed as a behavioural issue, not an academic one. When a student plagiarizes, this is also seen as a behavioural issue, and usually would not result in penal academic implications, even in advanced level 12U Courses. Policies are moving away from a grade-based system derived from an average of all student assignments in favour of a more general approach to reflects "the most recent and/or most consistent" achievement. There is a growing trend toward knowledge-based evaluation. Exams, even in courses like literature studies and philosophy, are commonly seen to be multiple choice and short answer exams.
