1. Introduction
Censorship is important as it filters out different contents for different age groups. The term censorship refers to limiting the public access to certain information, ideas or thoughts in order to prevent knowledge of freedom of thought (Dictionary, 2016). The Singapore government has distilled the country’s censorship guidelines into three categories. They are: print publications, films and videos. According to these guidelines, materials should not “erode the moral fabric of society.” For example, censoring of pornographic materials can prevent the society, especially the younger generation from being corrupted. At the same time, censoring anti-government content can provide stability to the society. Without censorship, anti-government groups may make use of the media to stir up the emotions of the public without consideration of public safety. It is important to discuss this topic because the world is in the Internet age whereby censorship control is the central topic of discussion for content contributors and consumers. For the purpose of this essay, we are looking at media in the form of the Internet and television. This research will now discuss the advantages of censorship in Singapore.
