Advantages And Disadvantages Of E-Textbooks

Recently, there has been widespread discussion on the use of e-textbooks. It is noted that a growing stream of students are replacing long-established print textbooks with e-textbooks. As defined by Armstrong et al., e-textbooks stand for “any piece of electronic text regardless of size or composition, but excluding journal publications, made available electronically for any device that includes screen.” (as cited in Ali et al, 2012, P.1802) Several research have been conducted to study both the advantages and drawbacks of using the e-textbooks instead of print textbooks, arguments for and against the statement will be discussed in different aspect as follow. Concerning the educational aspect, e-textbooks possess different functions which enable a more effective learning process, when compared to that of the paper textbooks. Functions including e-dictionary, words underlining, video clips watching, etc., which make learning more fun and further enhance the motivation of the students. In the research conducted by Maynard and Cheyne (2005), the results shown that students were able to achieve a higher grade in a group test as they were more willing to participate in the group work as well as creating a more productive and organized work (P.110). Students found that learning through electronic devices brought them a higher level of excitement and enjoyment, therefore boosting their learning quantity (P.111).
