In this article there are two sides to the debate of whether or not the states should be able to set their own drinking age. The pro side, represented by John McCardell says that if eighteen year olds are capable of being drafted for a war, they should be able to legally drink as well. The con side James C. Fell says that a lower drinking ages hel a higher risk of suicide and homicide, and thus keeping the drinking age at twenty one would be preventing nearly twelve hundred suicides and homicides combined. Things cannot always be easy, and this debate that the article focuses on is no exception. Throughout the history of America there have always been disputes of just how much power the federal government should be able to wield, and how much they should be able to limit the state's power.
Should we really lower the drinking age from 21 to a younger age? I think not, from what I heard about and researden about. The exact reason for this is, because teens could get in serious danger. A lot of people get in danger from health problem, this would affect their life. Drinking age should never be lower than 21 of age because lowering (MLDA) Minimum Legal Drinking Age 21 would be medically irresponsible, Minimum Legal Drinking Age 21 reduces traffic accidents and fatalities, and lastly lowering the drinking age will invite more use of illicit drugs among 18-21.
I believe that the minimum drinking age of 21 should be lowered to 19. "The U.S. is one of only seven nations in the entire world with a drinking age of 21. Most Western democracies allow their citizens to fight in wars, vote in elections and drink alcohol at age 18. " (Cary) If at that age of 18, you can make the decision of fighting for our country and voting on who our president will be, you should be able to chose if you want to drink responsibly or not.
Tristan Learner Mrs. Kezia Strite Ruiz English 1301: Composition 1 February 26, 2018 Why the Drinking Age Should Be Lowered One of the most common debates among my generation is, at what age should the legal drinking age be set? The question of lowering the drinking age has been up in the air for a while now and is now a legitimate question to consider. An eighteen-year-old in US has the right to vote, and serve in the military. If an eighteen-year-old can make up their mind as to who the potential leader of the country should be and take a bullet for their country, they should have every right to purchase and drink alcohol (Cognac). Even though there may be some cons to lowering the drinking age, like there is to anything we do, there is a lot of evidence that show the pros outweigh those. Before federal law mandated that 21 only laws be passed or funding would be pulled from states, there were several areas that had made it legal to drink as a teenager (HRF).
Should the United States lower the legal drinking age, which is now twenty-one, to a more reasonable age, such as eighteen. The legal drinking age is unjust and unfair. Therefore, it should be lowered to eighteen to make all adults equal. Individuals often compare drinking with unsuccessfulness and/or recklessness, and that is not the case at all. Overtime there have been millions of successful and intelligent people that commonly consumed alcohol.
However these safe drinking environments were not always obsolete among teenagers. Over 30 years ago, the drinking age was 18 years old before President Ronald Reagan signed the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984, “which mandated that all states adopt 21 as the legal drinking age over the next five years” (Cary, par. 3). Mary Kate Cary, contributing editor for U.S. News & World Report, takes a stance on the subject of lowering the drinking age in her article “Time to Lower the Drinking Age”. In her article, Cary reminisces about the olden times when “there was no need for “pregaming”- binge drinking in private apartments or dorms before heading out in public.
Should the legal drinking age be lowered back to eighteen years of age of age or do you believe it should stay? The topic of traffic accidents caused by drinkers especially newly legal drinkers will be brought up. I will then bring up the problems that alcohol being illegal to anyone who is under twenty one can bring to highschool and college students. Then I will talk about the reasons the drinking age was raised in the first place. I will later bring up what issues that are around now that could be stopped if we were to lower the drinking age back down to eighteen.
There are many debates on whether the U.S drinking age should be lowered to 18 or not. The drinking age should not be lowered to 18 due to the cause of intoxicated drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 32,719 people died in traffic crashes in 2013 in the United States( latest figures available), including an estimated 10,076 people who died in drunk driving crashes, accounting for 31% of an traffic deaths that year. With that said they should not let anyone fewer than 21 consume alcohol, except men and women who serve in our National Military on their base (responsibilty.org).
In the United States, eighteen year olds are allowed to get married, go to war, have kids, are old enough to vote, but still are not old enough to drink. At eighteen, you are allowed to go fight in combat but are not allowed to go to a liquor store. At eighteen years old, you are legally an adult in the states and you are now responsible for all the rights as an adult. Therefore, the drinking age should be
The debate of whether the U.S. federal government should lower the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) from 21 to 18 has been going on for several years. Before the 1980s, 18 was the minimum age that people could legally consume alcoholic beverages. However, a new policy advocating for an increase in the MLDA began to gain momentum in the early 1980s and by 1984, it had won over a majority of the Congress (Balko). In 1984, the U.S.government introduced the National Minimum Drinking Age Act to the public. This new law officially raised the MLDA from 18 to 21 and created much controversy throughout the nation.
What should be the legal drinking age in the United States? When you are 18 you can go off to war and die for you country but not have a beer. In my opinion I think that it should be 21 if the decide the move everything up with it or turn it to 19 because you are out of high school and there is not that thrill of doing it. They say that drinking can harm your brain if you over use and abuse it. What happened when people brought the drinking age up to 21 back.
A lot people question whether the legal drinking age should be lowered, or remain at 21. In the United States, The legal drinking age is 21, but in my research, I have found that it is actually allowed, under certain circumstances and situations, to people of even lower age. Though all 50 US states have set their minimum drinking age to 21, exceptions do exist on a state-by-state basis for consumption at home, under adult supervision, for medical necessity, and other reasons. In fact, all but 5 states, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, New Hampshire, and West Virginia, under age drinking is permitted. Parents are allowed to furnish alcohol to minors if they are under proper supervision.
Currently in California as well as in my other states the legal drinking age is 21. As some may know this has been a very controversial issue because of the harm alcohol has on the human body, but don’t you think you should have the option to take the risk or not, because i certainly do. Many countries have different legal ages like 16-20, others don’t have any at all for example, Cuba,Ghana, Montenegro, Morocco, Norway. Some newspapers, news channels and other news sources have all at some point touch this subject and have their own beliefs as well as opinions.
