That is why the Electoral College is so significant. The Electoral College was created to elect the president with the influence of the people but also the legitimacy of the people in office. The people of each state cast their votes and then those state’s electors cast their votes in reflection to what the people voted. It is a system that has worked well with the country for decades. That is what the government is to the United States. Leaders are supposed to make decisions and direct the group. That is why it is so important that a government is not indecisive. The other options instead of the electoral college exist because representation is the biggest problem with the Electoral College. However, if every state were to have different parties and powers within, there would naturally be indecisiveness. “That creates a system of government that tends to be indecisive and weak because everyone argues for their own best interests.” (Gaille). The electoral college may not be perfect, but it allows for decisions to be made quickly. Not everyone thinks alike and that means that no matter what happens the government will not please everybody. A leader is supposed to be able to lead. Not agree with everyone. It isn’t possible for a completely inadequate president to be elected. To even run for president, a candidate has to be nominated by their party. The electoral college ensures that the president will be a competent one. There is almost no risk of a president destroying the entire country. “Only three U.S. presidents have been formally impeached by Congress” (Roos). The electoral college might be controversial, but it ensures that both candidates are safe options. There has only been one president who would’ve been impeached out of 46
