The adaptive lifting scheme has an interesting property which provides the perfect reconstruction this does not involve any overhead cost. The update lifting step only affects the approximation signal. The update lifting filter is assumed to depend point wise on the norm of the associated gradient vector. The update lifting filter depends in such a way that a large gradient induces a weak update filter. Hence the sharp edges in a image is not smoothed as regions.
