Adventure In Beowulf

Have you ever received a call to adventure? In the story “Beowulf”, translated by Burton Raffel, and the stories in “Call to adventure,” by Joseph Campbell, all of the main characters have a call to adventure. In “Beowulf,” the main character Beowulf’s call to adventure is to kill Grendel, a guy who murders Danish men. In the call to adventure stories, they are all driven one thing and they all want to get to one thing. The epic poem Beowulf exemplifies the claims made by Joseph Campbell regarding the hero’s call to adventure.

In Beowulf, the character Beowulf himself has a specific call to adventure that he will do whatever it takes to achieve it. He goes after Grendel, who not only kills Danish men, but he murders them while they are sleeping. He will stop at nothing to rid the earth of that man who is taking people’s lives for no reason. similarly , in the “call to adventure” stories, one of them being about this Native American girl, she goes after a porcupine. They could say that they may be similar in some ways but they mostly exemplify each other. Yes, they aren’t created from the same author. Or even in the same language, but they are very alike. They don’t have the same characters or same goals but they still all have something to accomplish, and they aren’t going to stop until they do. Ambition is huge. It can drive people crazy but sometimes it shows a strong suit because you don’t give up.

Both stories show people with goals to attain. They exemplify each other in ways that most would agree on. They may not be that similar in what the story is about, but the structure of the stories say different. People become driven by ambition to achieve goals, which in the world today plays a big part. Most would say this, once you have ambition to do something, you will do whatever it takes to make it
