Background: Well –integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded program which operates out of 22 sites across the United States. WISEWOMAN programs provides screening for heart disease and stroke risk factors and lifestyle programs for many low-income, uninsured, or under-insured women aged 40–64 years ( CDC, 2015). WISEWOMAN is a direct care service program which has increasingly began serving as a National Diabetes Prevention Program “payer”. With its reach into 20 states, WISEWOMAN provides the platform for low-income women who would not otherwise have access to the National DPP, to participate in the yearlong CDC recognized lifestyle change program.
Everyone has to overcome adversity in their life. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character, Rainsford, fell of his boat at night time On the Island, Rainsford finds a home where General Zaroff lives. The problem is that the only way he can leave the island is if he survives a “game”. Where General Zaroff is hunting him. So Rainsford has to survive for three days.
Being resilient in tough situations can be substantial in some cases. To be resilient means one has great wit, especially in a 'finding a way out ' scenario. It can even be the key to survival, as can be shown in a short excerpt from Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It gives a great example of resilience based off of a situation that Louie Zamperini finds himself and crew in as their plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. What characteristic is most important in helping Louie survive?
War Combat, loyalty, enmity, bloodshed, and duty, all words that fit under the category of war. The novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is about Louis Zamperini a strong willed man raised in Torrance, California. He started as a young troublemaker until he discovered his passion for running in high school. That very passion led him to compete in the Olympics. Later he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, a brave decision that would change his life.
Life can be difficult, and people every day have to endure their own type of adversity, but adversity isn’t limited to just one problem but an array of difficulties. These problems can appear from many factors may it be a physical, mental, or social situation. The problems of adversity can be seen in the book The Other Wes Moore, as throughout the book, both of the Moore’s have faced different problems, with one overcoming, and the other being stuck with obstacles. When anyone is in the face of adversity, being guided to overcome will lead to success, while the less guided will lead to more stresses. Any type of adversity can emerge at any time, but the best way to overcome it is to find guidance.

For example, how people can adapt to their environment, and learn the positivity from family and friends can help them surpass the adversity. In There are No Children Here, Alex Kotlowitz has showed the life of Lafayette and Pharoah Rivers living through the violent projects of "Henry Honer Projects" and how the boys dealt with all the crime activities that occur there. In Along Way Gone, Ishmael describe the tragedies he had went through in the Sierra Leone War, and explained different ways how he overcomes the different obstacles that he had to deal with. For example, war like environment, loss of his friends and family, and rehabilitation center.

Dealing with Adversity Throughout one’s life, adversity is inevitable. It presents itself unexpectedly in many forms; loneliness, despair, loss of a loved one, stress, and even in the actions of others. In the novel “Three Day Road” by Joseph Boyden, Elijah faces adversity after joining the war. However, the approaches Elijah takes to overcome the several hardships he faces makes him an undesirable model for coping with adversity. Elijah’s approaches are ineffective at coping with adversity because he follows misguided advice and becomes apathetic during war, resulting in major impacts on his life which lead to his downfall.
In his novel, “Always Outnumbered Always Outgunned” author Walter Mosley places importance on the idea of male black bonds though the idea of brotherhood. He uses the main character, Socrates, and his relationships with other male black men to show the importance of community. Mosley uses his novel to state that brotherhood can be used to combat white injustice and better the black community by looking out for one another. The first brotherly relationship that Socrates has is with Daryl.
As the Roman poet Horace once said, "adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant." In other words, he believed that challenges are beneficial because they bring out talents that would have stayed hidden otherwise. He thought that adversity would force a person to use their unknown talents out of desperation. Some argue that his theory is irrelevant and that a person 's skills will develop just as well without adversity if they have the capacity, but I believe that hardships will evoke and improve on their dormant talents.

Two hunters are on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea, when one falls off and washes up on an island. There, he meets General Zaroff, a man with only one desire. To hunt humans. He makes Rainsford (the man from the shipwreck), go loose on the island in order to hunt him.
Throughout my childhood, my parents taught me values of empathy, resilience and optimism in the face of adversity. These characteristics allowed me to become the tenacious individual that I am today. Being the inquisitive individual I am, I always wondered about my family’s heritage; the journey of how we established ourselves in this country. Yet I never imagined how much of a nightmare it was immigrating to the United States until my mother told the story. My mother immigrated to the United States facing a harrowing journey, one that placed her at the mercy of the environment and the intersection of many harsh opinions.
