Circumstances can make or break a person. For example, if a person is born into poverty he can be a product of his environment or break free of the limitations for that environment. This a present concept in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. One of the main characters Liesel circumstances are challenging. Challenges in life are inevitable. Whether they are external or internal, they can have a significant impact on the individual. Therefore, one should be thoughtful of his or her response to the challenges he or she is encountering. This idea of one managing to respond to challenges in a myriad of ways is often explored in literature. In the short story "Wing's Chips," Mavis Gallant makes powerful use of character development to suggest that when one is faced with challenges, one may respond with acts of ambition, or one may respond with acts of doubt and insecurity.

Adversity is a touch subject, everyone must go through it. Napoleon fought his adversity, the cold weather of Russia. Martin Luthor King Jr. faced his adversity, segregation. All through history and in the future, adversity haunts, and since there is no way to get rid of it one must learn when it is better to accept it, or fight back, or both. Obstacles can be challenging, and difficult, but people can overcome them by never giving up, always trying their best, and surrounding themselves with families and friends. Two stories that I have read that show adversity are “A Work in Progress” by Aimee Mullins which is about a little girl losing her leg. The other story I read is “So Far From the Bamboo Grove” by Yoko Kawashima Watkins about a little girl that has to leave her home because of war and has very big obstacles to overcome. Aimee Mullins and the Kawashimas both face obstacles that include losing family members, walking very far in intense weather, and people doubting you and trying to stop you. In the end they all make it through the the challenges mentally and physically.

The Roman poet, Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Horace argues that difficult circumstances critically impact the development of one’s character. Although some may argue that character will reveal itself regardless if adversity is present, I agree with Horace’s perspective, adversity determines one's potential capabilities, strengthens personal values, and provides a feeling of self-worth.
